Description

This Accounting Financial Statement Analysis is a GREAT way to bring REAL WORLD Accounting in your classroom! There is a comprehensive TEACHER’S KEY included with many suggestions of how to teach and incorporate in your High School Accounting classroom.

Great for Accounting, Entrepreneurship, or Intro to Business class

This file is a collection of stock information, balance sheet, income statement, and cash flows statement of VF Corporation, the mother company of many popular brands such as Vans, Timberland, JanSport, Dickies and many more!

This file is NOT created to have beginning accounting students complete independently.  This file was created to complete AS A CLASS…TOGETHER.

Why do I say this?  The textbook does not cover many of these concepts, but I want my students to know how to navigate a REAL financial statement from a REAL corporation.

New concepts learned in this file:

  • Branding and how corporations often have a “portfolio” of brands.
  • Full Disclosure GAAP Concept. This is discussed in the textbook, but this activity is a GREAT opportunity to discuss this concept again.
  • Accounting students are introduced to stock market tickers and indexes and learn to locate a stock selling price.
  • Students are made aware that most ‘real world’ corporate financial statements are ‘in thousands’.
  • Students are prompted to analyze a simple chart on Earnings Per Share and become familiar with financial acronyms such as EPS and FY (Fiscal Year).
  • Students are prompted to identity account classifications and locate them on each financial statement.
  • The Cash Flow Statement is not introduced in most accounting textbooks (for high school accounting students) until later on in the text.  It is a VERY IMPORTANT statement in real world accounting.  I expose my students to the cash flow statement as much as I can.

My suggestion is to use this file as a lesson and learning experience and complete it with your students.  I give my students 10 activity points as a grade for completing it in class with me…that’s just me 🙂  You may choose to not grade this as it was done together.

This file is a GREAT way to help foster critical thinking skills in your accounting class! ENGAGING!
