I used this Home Buying activity when I was observed last year, and my principal was so impressed! Students learn the importance of maintaining a good credit score as well as how making extra payments can drastically reduce the amount of interest paid over the years of the loan. Students learn a new word – Amortization. Students gasp at the realization of how much interest will be paid back during the life of a 30-year mortgage when they see their amortization schedule. It’s a big REALITY CHECK!

In the second activity, the students ‘Go House Shopping’ and ‘buy’ a home. They prepare their own schedule and analyze it by color coding.
